Newsletter February–March 2025
The Eurobattery newsletter is back, this time with a double edition, February and March. Let´s sum up what we did during these two months.
Eurobattery Minerals and ABB has joined forces for responsible mining

Ilari Kinnunen, managing director of FinnCocablt Oy and Petri Vuolukka, Segment Lead - Battery & Metals & Mining | VP | Industry Segment Manager at ABB Oy
Eurobattery Minerals’ Finnish subsidiary, FinnCobalt, has signed an agreement with global technology leader ABB to explore innovative solutions for more sustainable mining. The collaboration will focus on using cutting-edge technologies—such as electrification, instrumentation, automation, and digitalization (EIAD)—to make mining more efficient, safer, and environmentally friendly.
As a first step, ABB will conduct a study to assess how these technologies can be applied to FinnCobalt’s mining operations. The goal is to create a modern, responsible mining model that reduces environmental impact while improving productivity.
“This partnership is a major step toward our vision of greener and more efficient mining,” said Roberto García Martínez, CEO of Eurobattery Minerals.
FinnCobalt and ABB share a commitment to sustainability and innovation, aiming to set a new industry standard for responsible mineral extraction.

Eurobattery Minerals applies for EU Funding to boost European mining
Eurobattery Minerals’ Finnish subsidiary, FinnCobalt, has applied for up to €2.5 million in funding through the ERMA Booster Call 2025. This EU-backed initiative aims to strengthen Europe’s access to essential raw materials, reducing reliance on imports and supporting the green transition.

If approved, the funding will help accelerate FinnCobalt’s battery mineral project, contributing to a more sustainable and self-sufficient European supply chain.
“Europe must take control of its raw materials to ensure a secure and competitive future. This funding would help us advance responsible mining in Europe,” said Ilari Kinnunen, Managing Director of FinnCobalt Oy.
With increasing global demand for nickel, cobalt, and copper, Eurobattery Minerals is committed to supplying responsibly mined minerals for clean energy, e-mobility, and European industry.

Eurobattery Minerals evaluates next steps for CRMA Strategic Project Status
Eurobattery Minerals’ Hautalampi battery mineral project in Finland was not selected in the first round of applications for the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) Strategic Project status. However, just reaching this stage highlights the project’s significance in securing responsibly sourced minerals for Europe’s green transition.
“The need for nickel, cobalt, and copper in Europe is greater than ever, and our commitment to supplying these critical minerals remains equally strong,” said Roberto García Martínez, CEO of Eurobattery Minerals.

With additional CRMA calls expected soon, we will continue our hard work with the same dedication, strengthening our project and look how we can refine the application for possible future calls under the CRMA.
Eurobattery Minerals CEO featured on EFN Ekonomikanalen
Our CEO, Roberto García Martínez, was recently interviewed by EFN Ekonomikanalen, a leading financial news outlet in Sweden, owned by Handelsbanken.
The discussion covered key topics shaping the future of the mining industry and Europe’s green transition, including:
✅ The growing demand for battery minerals like cobalt, copper, and nickel.
✅ China’s dominance in refining and shifts in global raw materials politics.
✅ The challenge of balancing sustainability (ESG) with cost efficiency.
✅ How the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) can strengthen Europe’s supply chain.
✅ The journey from exploration to full-scale mining production.
✅ Insights from Northvolt and their impact on the industry and investors.
A strong and self-sufficient supply of critical raw materials is essential for Europe’s climate goals, security, and industrial future. Financing, faster permitting, and regulatory stability are key to making this happen.

Mining Boost Breakfast with Nasdaq Nordic in Helsinki
Our Finnish Managing Director Ilari Kinnunen pitched the Hautalampi battery mineral project at Nasdaq Nordic Mining Boost Breakfast in Helsinki.

He had the opportunity to present FinnCobalt Oy and Eurobattery Minerals AB at this event, organized by Mining Finland and Nasdaq Nordic.
In total, eight companies did a rapid fire presentation of their project. The event used a very “dynamic” presentation style: PechaKucha 20x20 format—20 slides with 20 seconds each. A fast-paced pitch in 400 seconds to promote our mission to supply Europe with responsibly mined critical raw materials for batteries. ⚡️⚡️⚡️
It is always good to share insights with investors, colleagues and industry experts; lots of (battery) energy in the room we have been told.

Strengthening partnerships and advancing responsible mining at PDAC 2025

Eurobattery Minerals and our subsidiary FinnCobalt Oy had a strong presence at PDAC 2025, the world’s leading mining industry event in Toronto, Canada. Our Finnish Managing Director, Ilari Kinnunen, represented us in key discussions, highlighting our commitment to responsible and traceable critical minerals for Europe's green transition.
Key Highlights from PDAC 2025:
➡️ Collaboration with GTK Mintec – We explored further cooperation with one of the world's most advanced mineral processing pilot plants in Outokumpu, Finland. Their expertise is crucial in developing sustainable mineral processing solutions.
➡️ Nordic Mining Day Presentation – We proudly showcased the Hautalampi battery mineral project, emphasizing:
- Our JORC-compliant nickel, cobalt, and copper resources.
- Plans for CO₂-free, even net-zero mining, including carbon capture and solar energy integration.
- Cutting-edge processing innovations using electrification, instrumentation, automation, and digitalization (EIAD), in collaboration with ABB.
➡️ Engaging with Key Industry Leaders – From meeting Sean DeVries of Battery Metals Association of Canada (BMAC) to discussions with Mining Finland CEO Lasse Moilanen, we gained valuable insights into the global prioritization of critical minerals for energy, defence, and industrial applications.
PDAC 2025 reaffirmed Finland’s leading role in sustainable and high-tech mining and strengthened our position in Europe’s push for raw material independence. We look forward to continuing these conversations and preparing for PDAC 2026!

Water modelling with the help of geophysical experts
We are advancing our Environmental Permit Application with water modelling and we organized a meeting with geophysical experts Turo Ahokas and Aimo Hattula, along with Jani Junnila from Envineer Oy (participating remotely via link).

Water modelling in the mining sector refers to the use of computer simulations and data analysis to understand, predict, and manage water movement in and around a mine site in the surface and in the ground. It helps mining companies like us to assess risks, optimize water use, and comply with environmental regulations.
Professionalism and great experience from Turo ad Aimo! We are grateful for all the knowledge that they can share from the area of geophysics during the process. Excellent work by the team which helps us to move forward to other important tasks.,
🚀 Onwards and upwards 🚀
As always, we had a lot of news for you about interesting events, meetings, and happenings from the months of February and March 2025. The Eurobattery Minerals Team will continue to work hard to bring you more news and developments very soon, so stay tuned! 🔥🔥🔥
